Dunedin, in the heart of south Otago and the gateway to the Catlins, Balclutha
(Pop 4178) built on the banks of the Clutha River, which is New Zealand's
largest river in volume.
Balcultha is the gateway (following the Southern Scenic Route) to the picturesque Catlins area, while State Highway 1 leads through the rich farming lands of Clinton and Waipahi, which offer hunting and fishing. Also near Balclutha, is the former coal mining town of Kaitangata.
Balclutha is served by InterCity Coachlines services from Invercargill, Dunedin and Christchurch.
