Located 82 kms south west of Dunedin, in the heart of south Otago and the gateway to the Catlins, Balclutha (Pop 4178) built on the banks of the Clutha River, which is New Zealand's largest river in volume.

It is ideal place to stop for a meal or a night's rest before exploring the wonders of the Catlins. An impressive concrete-arched bridge spans the Clutha River, which is excellent for fishing and boating, important industries in this highly productive argicultural area.

Balcultha is the gateway (following the Southern Scenic Route) to the picturesque Catlins area, while State Highway 1 leads through the rich farming lands of Clinton and Waipahi, which offer hunting and fishing. Also near Balclutha, is the former coal mining town of Kaitangata.

Balclutha is served by InterCity Coachlines services from Invercargill, Dunedin and Christchurch.
