In 1998 New Zealand was the first international gay and lesbian destination to introduce an 'Approved Gay/Lesbian Friendly'  criteria for straight accommodation providers wishing to be involved in New Zealand's gay and lesbian accommodation network.

On 1 October 2004 the 'Approved Gay/lesbian Friendly' criteria was been rebanded to 'Rainbow Tourism Accreditation'.

The Rainbow Tourism Accreditation (RTA) programme is to maintain quality in standards and service and is operated by Gay Tourism New Zealand in association with Rainbow Tourism International. Your support in supporting those gay and lesbian owned or straight accommodation providers who are 'Rainbow Tourism Accredited' (RTA) or have 'Rainbow Tourism Accreditation Pending' would be appreciate.
